Three Yummy Ice Cream Recipes

Hey Everyone! I made some yummy ice cream for the fam this weekend for dessert while my hubby made beer can chicken for dinner. The kiddos got orange sherbet, I got chocolate peanut butter and I made my hubby vanilla bean. I took some recipes off of the internet and tweeked them a bit. Here is what I came up with:

  • Orange Sherbet:

  • One 1-2L bottle orange pop (any brand, we used Publix)

  • One 14 oz. can sweetened, condensed milk

  • Pour both into the ice cream maker. Turn on. Follow manufacturer's instructions!

  • Chocolate Peanut Butter:

  • 2 cups half & half

  • 1/4 unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • pinch of salt

  • 1/4 cup - 1/3 cup smooth peanut butter

  • Whisk together all ingredients in a large pan except peanut butter. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Add peanut butter, blend thoroughly. Chill in regrigerater. Pour into ice cream maker. Follow manufacturers instructions.

  • Vanilla Bean:

  • 2 1/4 cups half & half

  • 3/4 cup whipping cream

  • 2/3-3/4 cup sugar depending on taste (sweetness)

  • 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped

  • Mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring almost to a boil, but do NOT let it boil. Once you see the bubbles, remove it from heat. Let it cool, preferably overnight to let the flavors meld. Pour into ice cream maker. Follow manufacturers instructions.

These are just the first three recipes I tried with my new ice cream maker (tweaked versions). I'll update with more if I find any more that I like in the future! If anyone knows of one that actually has big chunks of frozen peanut butter in chocolate ice cream, please let me know!

Ideas to be Green

I endeavor to be "green" in all aspects of my life as much as I possibly can. From changing our light bulbs to having a hybrid car, we have made many little changes. Even our kids pitch in and recycle. (I will admit, I do reach in the trash and pull out recyclables that have been thrown away) Here are some ideas that you can do too!

Around the house
  • Recycle everything you can-- cans, newspapers, glass, aluminum foil & pans, motor oil, batteries, scrap metal, etc.
  • Cut up the plastic rings that hold six pack drinks so birds and sea creatures don't get stuck in them
  • Create a compost pile-- it makes great fertilizer for those homegrown veggies
  • Reuse old t-shirts that are holey or don't fit as rags
  • Clean with plain old white vinegar and water rather than chemical products
  • Use cloth napkins
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and washing your hands
  • Program your thermostat to 78 in the summer and 68 in the winter, and turn it down/up 2 degrees while you are away and asleep
  • Use an insulating blanket on your hot water heater

Outside

  • Pull your weeds rather than using herbicides (plus you'll get some exercise)
  • Use beer traps for slugs instead of baiting with poison
  • Use mulch to conserve water in your garden
  • Plant native shrubs and grasses rather than large expanses of grass. While grass is beautiful, it does not make good habitat for creatures
  • Don't burn leaves-- it creates air pollution, compost instead
  • Plant short, dense shrubs near your home's foundation to help insulate it from the cold
  • Plant a garden
  • Use old 2 liter bottles turned upside down (lid on), poked with holes, filled with water in the garden to continuously water plants. Water will be delivered to the plant on an as need basis, and you only need to refill when the bottle is empty.
  • Do not feed wild animals

Out and About

  • Use public transportation
  • Walk or ride your bike
  • Buy a hybrid or more fuel efficient car
  • Check your tires- pressure, alignment, etc
  • Don't litter!
  • Don't buy "disposable" items (cups, plates, spoons, etc); if you must, buy paper, not plastic or Styrofoam
  • Buy in bulk-- reduces pollution and packaging
  • Buy recycled products
  • Read labels- buy organic or the least toxic to the environment that you possibly can
  • Bring your own reusable bag to the store- I am guilty of forgetting to do this so I now have a stash in my car and another hanging in my pantry

Things You Can Do In Your Everyday Life

  • Join a conservation organization
  • Donate money to a worthy organization, my personal favorites: http://www.isfoundation.com/ http://www.worldwildlife.org/home-full.html http://www.conservation.org/Pages/default.aspx
  • Watch nature programs on TV
  • Think about the effects of your daily lifestyle on the environment
  • Tease, shame, persuade make fun of your friends and family for not being environmentally friendly
  • Teach children to respect nature and the environment. Take them on a hike, build birdhouses, buy them nature books, let them watch documentaries, etc.
  • Buy organic- it's not that much more expensive and in some instances (like cereal) it's the same price or cheaper than the national brand
  • Watch Food, Inc. - You will have a new perspective on the food processes in this country

These are just some ideas. I don't take credit for them all, but they are great ideas that I put in play in my household. Just some food for thought!

Cool website for anyone with teenagers

I have a customer who is a Delta pilot who runs a motivational book/speaking business on the side. But, his business has a twist. He talks about drinking with teenagers and college kids. And not the normal old drinking is bad speech, but one more about making educated choices. We all know kids are going to drink, so why don't we educate them to do it more responsibly? I think this is a step in the right direction. Educated teens may make better choices thus reducing injuries and deaths from this addictive drug. Check out his website here:
